SA: Irrigators to get extra water - on loan from Snowy scheme
Environment Minister JOHN HILL says the Snowy Mountains hydro scheme has offered toadvance South Australian irrigators water during the current drought.
Mr HILL says the hydro scheme has offered to advance up to 50 gigalitres of water inthe 2003-04 irrigation year to be paid back between 2004 and 2006.
He says the state government will help irrigators along the Murray who want to takeup the offer by coordinating the purchase negotiations.
He says he regards the water as expensive because on top of costing up to $180 permegalitre, it will have to be returned in the future.
But some farmers may feel that having this water during a period of drought is worth pursuing.
