Qld: Pilot killed in ultralight crash
BRISBANE, Feb 19 AAP - An experienced pilot died today when his aircraft nosedived
into trees near an airport runway.
The accident happened just after 10am (EST) at Caloundra airport, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Two energex community rescue helicopters flew to the crash scene, while ambulance and
fire crews checked for any other occupants.
Sgt Brian Chapman from Maroochydore police said the pilot, believed to be a local man
aged in his early 50s, went into a downward spiral shortly after take-off.
The pilot was travelling east and then attempted to shift direction slightly, when
he must have "stalled" and gone into the spiral, Sgt Chapman said.
Sgt Chapman said the pilot was experienced, but it was the first time he had piloted
the ultralight involved in today's crash.
He was the sole occupant.
The man's relatives are yet to formally identify his body.
